Magnetic characteristic curve of shunt generator-

When there is no load on the generator, the shunt coil can be considered in the category of armature. Initially, due to residual magnetism in the field magnets of the generator, the flux is cut by the conductors due to the rotation of the armature, due to which some induced voltage is generated in the conductors. This induced voltage sends current in the magnetic field and this current makes the strength of the magnetic field stronger. The result of this is that the induced voltage increases and it again sends more current to the shunt field than before, due to which the field strength increases compared to before.

This process continues until the machine generates full voltage. The voltage produced in the machine for a given speed depends on the magnetization curve of the machine and the total resistance of the field.

This produced emf

(1) provides ohmic drop in the field coil and

(2) overcomes the opposing self-induced emf L.di/dt in the field coil.
