Draw a diagram of a three point starter used for operating a direct current shunt motor and explain its working.

Friends, today in this article we will learn about the three point motor starter. I am going to give you information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.

Three point motor starter –

The internal structure of the starter is as shown in the figure. It has three terminals, L for line F or Z for shunt field and A for armature. A piece of soft iron is attached to the handle. When this iron section brings the handle to ON position, it gets attracted to the magnetising coil and keeps the handle in ON position. The spring attached to the handle brings the handle to OFF position when the motor is off. When the motor has to be started, the handle is brought to the first stud, which starts the motor and then slowly rotate the handle towards ON position. By bringing it to ON position, the extra resistance applied in the armature circuit is removed.

In the starter, the magnetic coil (no-voltage release coil) is placed in series with the shunt field and when the handle is brought to the first stand, it gets connected to the electric supply and when brought to the ON position, this coil holds the handle. But when due to some reason it does not get the required voltage, it becomes powerless and is unable to keep the handle in the ON position and the handle comes to the OFF position due to spring pressure. If the handle remains in the ON position even after the motor is switched off, then when the motor again gets the applied voltage from the supply, there may be a possibility of many damages due to the initial high current. In this way, the magnetic coil (no-volt coil) protects the motor from damage.

What did you learn today:-

Now you must have known what is the three point motor starter and you must have got the answer to all these questions very well.
